Sell Your Records

Looking to sell your vinyl records?

Whether you’ve inherited a collection, are clearing out space, or are preparing to emigrate, Mr Vinyl is always looking to buy quality records.

What We Buy

We look for vinyl records in good condition, focusing primarily on releases from the 1970s through to the 1990s.

Our preferred genres:

  • Rock, Pop, Indie, Metal, Punk, and Alternative
  • Jazz, Blues, Soul, Funk, and RnB
  • Hip-Hop and Rap

We buy these under strict conditions:

  • Classical: We only buy specialist, high-quality classical collections in excellent condition.
  • Dance Music: We only buy dance records in perfect condition (no heavily scratched DJ copies) and avoid titles that are too dated for resale.

What We Do Not Buy

To save you time, please note that we do not buy:

  • Scratched or damaged records
  • Classical or dance music that is not in perfect condition
  • Big Band, Swing, Opera, or Musicals
  • Reader’s Digest box sets
  • 78s and shellac records
  • Cassettes or CDs
  • Audio gear (turntables, amplifiers, speakers, or Hi-Fi equipment)

How to Sell to Us

The Mr Vinyl buyer is in-store on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays. Please note that we cannot accept collections on Mondays, Fridays, or Sundays.

You do not need to book an appointment, but please contact us first so we can confirm that your collection is a good fit for the shop.

Ready to sell? Fill out the form below with as much detail as possible. Once we have an idea of what you have, we may request a few photos via email or WhatsApp.

    FAQ

Q: Do I need to come to the shop, or can you come to me to view the collection?

A: Our buyer is based in-store, so you will generally need to bring the collection to us. For very large or highly specialized collections, we can arrange for our buyer to visit you. We will still need to get an initial idea of what you are selling first and may request a list or some photos.

Q: I am not based in Johannesburg, can I still sell to you?

A: Yes, in some cases we can make an offer on out-of-town collections and arrange for our courier to collect the records from you. This is decided on a case-by-case basis and typically follows this process:

    1. Get a ballpark estimate: If we don’t have a buyer in your city, we can offer a preliminary “ballpark” figure once you send us a list and a few photos of the collection.
    2. Pack and ship: If the estimate works for you, we will send a courier to collect the records. You will just need to pack them securely in a box for safe shipping.
    3. In-hand appraisal: Once the records arrive at Mr Vinyl, our buyer will physically appraise the collection and make a final offer based on condition and rarity.
    4. Finalize or return: If we reach a deal, we pay you. If we can’t agree on a final price, we will ship the records back to you via our courier.

(Please note: Because shipping is a significant expense for us, we ask that you carefully consider our preliminary ballpark estimate before we arrange the courier.)

Q: What do you pay per record?

A: It is impossible to give a flat rate without inspecting the records in person. A record’s value is determined by its condition, rarity, and pressing variant (among other factors). Two copies of the exact same album can have vastly different values based on these details.
