How Do Vouchers Work?
How it works for the buyer…
- Add a voucher to your cart and checkout
- On the checkout page where you confirm your details, you will be prompted to select whether you would like the voucher sent to yourself, or sent as a gift to someone else
- If you select the gift option, you can then enter the recipient’s email address and a personal message.
- On completing checkout, the voucher will be emailed to the lucky recipient. It looks just like this:
How it works for the recipient…
- The voucher contains a code and it works just like our promo coupons do
- On the checkout page, the recipient simply enters the voucher code in and they’ll receive their credit. Woohoo!
We’re here to help…
Need help or have any questions about vouchers? Just email us and we’ll talk you through it.
Is it just me or are some records disappearing from your site?
No! It’s not just you. When a record is sold, it will disappear from the site’s catalogue. When it is back in stock, it will be visible again. Please note that the site works on a first-come-first-served basis for sales.
I don’t want to pay or give my details online. Can we make another arrangement?
Definitely! Many of our customers choose to rather email us a list of records that they want off of the site, then request an invoice, and complete a direct EFT.
Alternatively, come through to our store! We’re open 7 days a week!
I completed payment but my order is marked as cancelled. What gives?
Sorry about that! From time-to-time, there is a delay in the payment being processed with Payfast. Although most EFTs clear instantly, some will take a little time to clear, which might result in our system automatically, yet incorrectly, marking your order as cancelled.
If this happens to you, don’t stress, we’ll hear from Payfast soon enough about your payment and get your order processed. However, if you would like to speed things up, please email us with your proof of payment and we’ll get you sorted ASAP.
How Do You Grade Used Vinyl?
When it comes to grading vinyl, Mr Vinyl makes use of a slightly stricter Goldmine Grading Scale. Records are graded and placed in the following categories:
New & Sealed: The vinyl is brand new and has been received directly from the record label, distributor or manufacturer. It has never been played and is factory sealed.
Near-Mint (NM): This record is secondhand, but is practically perfect. It shows signs of being opened, and perhaps being played once or twice, but it is pretty much as good as it gets. Discs: the discs show no scratches and no sign of wear. Cover: the cover is beautiful and does not have tears or any scuffs.
Very Good ++ (VG++): In some circles, VG++ is referred to as Excellent or EX. VG++ denotes a record that is very nearly NM. A record that is graded VG++ might have a minor crease or defect on the cover and at worst, the disc might show a small spindle mark or the tiniest hairline scratch.
Very Good + (VG+): VG+ records are always a clever buy. They’re usually a little cheaper, and any defects are only small or superficial and don’t affect the overall experience of the record. Discs: the discs show one or two hairline scratches (that won’t affect playback), they might also show a little spindle wear, but nothing too noticeable. In terms of sound, you might notice a little surface noise at isolated moments, or the occasional sound defect. Cover: the cover might have some creases, scuffs and signs of minor general wear. Nothing major in this department!
Very Good (VG): VG records are similar to VG+ records in the sense that defects here are only superficial, but they are a bit more noticeable. Discs: the discs might have lost their shine and various hairline scratches will be visible (these won’t affect uninterrupted playback). The spindle might show general wear, there might be a sticker or writing on the label. The discs might have a little surface noise and/or a few pops. Even though the discs may have one or more of these defects; it will still play through uninterrupted and will be a pleasurable, authentic ‘vintage’ vinyl listening experience. Snap, crackle and pop from time-to-time; but more of an added charm than hindrance. Covers: Cover wear is noticeable, but still looks pretty good. Ring wear, signs of storage wear, some creases, dented corners, seam split and stickers or writing might be visible on the cover; but in all, it still looks pretty good.
Good + (G+) & Good (G): Goldmine perhaps describes this best:
“Good does not mean bad! The record still plays through without skipping, so it can serve as filler until something better comes along. But it has significant surface noise and groove wear, and the label is worn, with significant ring wear, heavy writing, or obvious damage caused by someone trying to remove tape or stickers and failing miserably. A Good to VG– cover has ring wear to the point of distraction, has seam splits obvious on sight and may have even heavier writing”
In the product title, you might see something like this at the end of the album’s title: (VG+/VG). In grading, the discs are always graded first (which in this example would be VG+) and the cover is graded second (which in this example is VG).
Do you keep Stock?
Yes! Unless explicitly stated, we keep stock of all vinyls listed on this site and they’re available at our shop. We like it that way, as it means that we can ship to you immediately as well.
What Is the Collection Address?
The collection address is our shop:
44 Stanley Ave.
Where Can I Buy From You?
Besides shopping directly from the website, Mr Vinyl’s shop is located at the 44 Stanley Ave. centre in Milpark, Johannesburg. Alternatively, you can find us at the #VinylSundays Vinyl Fair (which takes place on the first Sunday of every month at the Stanley Beer Yard).
Wherever we go, wherever you find us, we have card machines and a good selection of records. If you choose to buy from us on this site or another, we’ll always accept Visa, Mastercard, EFT and Bitcoin.
Can I Custom Order Some Records From You?
Yes! But it really depends on what we have access to. Unfortunately, the vinyl revolution doesn’t quite have defined and reliable distribution channels just yet, so it can be quite difficult to track down certain records. Send us a mail though, we’ll see what we can do.
Is Vinyl Really Better Than CDs or Mp3s?
Yes! This article might help you out a little on your quest to understand why.
What Record Players Do You Recommend?
This is quite a difficult one to answer, because it really depends on your budget and home setup. Like just about everyone else though, we really recommend Technics SL 1200 turntables and reliable brands like Rega, Thorens, Denon and Pro-Ject.
Failing these, we’d recommend that you go to an audio visual store and buy a new turntable (that isn’t an Ion or Crossley!).
Do you Sell Record Players?
Yes! We mostly stock Rega & Pro-Ject. Come to our store to see these in action.
Do you Ship Outside of South Africa?
Unfortunately, vinyls are big and heavy and difficult to ship. As such, we will only ship internationally by special arrangement. If you are an international collector, please email us with your request. Perhaps we can make a plan.
Who Are You Guys?
We’re the guys from MusicReview. You might know us from there. If you don’t, hi, how do you do? My name is Bret Dugmore and together with my brothers Jason, Shane, Luke & Junior – we run Mr Vinyl – an obsessive hobby, turned record store. Hope to hear from you soon!
Can You Combine Shipping?
Yes! We charge the same flat rate for orders. So you’ll pay the same shipping rate whether you buy 1 or 10 vinyls.
What Methods Of Shipping & Collection Are Available?
At present we offer 2 shipping & collection options. Orders are usually processed and dispatched within 24 hours.
1. Collect from us at our shop at 44 Stanley Avenue in Milpark, Johannesburg. Collections are FREE.
2. Priority Courier (door-to-door). Your order will be sent your way with a courier and will be with you in 1 – 2 business days (usually the next day). Priority Courier shipping rate is R79.
Please note that delivery to some outlying and difficult-to-reach areas may cost more. A flat rate of R120 is charged for delivery to these areas, and delivery may take a day or two longer.
All records shipped come with outer plastic sleeves, are wrapped in bubble wrap or foam, and carefully packed in our custom, secure boxes with fragile stickers on them.
Shipping is combined on all orders, so you will pay the same flat rate whether you order 1 or 10 records, for example.

Mr Vinyl is fully integrated with, and is a registered and verified PayFast and FNB merchant. As such, we accept Visa, Mastercard & EFT.
