Southern hip-hop (frequently referred to as Dirty South) is a regional umbrella term encompassing rap music originating from the Southern United States. Emerging as a powerhouse counterweight to the dominant East Coast and West Coast scenes of the late 1980s and 1990s, the South reshaped modern hip-hop production through heavy bass, distinctive regional slang, infectious club energy, and rich live or electronic instrumentation.
